The 50% rule
If a repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new appliance, replacing is usually smarter. Below that, repair typically wins.
Check the age
Typical lifespans: refrigerators 10–15 years, washers and dryers 10–13, dishwashers 9–12, ranges 13–15. A mid-life appliance is almost always worth fixing.
Consider the type of failure
Fans, switches, igniters, belts and pumps are inexpensive. Compressors, sealed systems and main control boards on older units are where the math changes.
Built-in and premium appliances
High-end built-ins like Sub-Zero or Wolf are designed to be repaired for decades, and replacing them often means cabinetry work too.
